Glycolic Acid: The Resurfacing AHA — How Peels Work, Strengths and Jaipur Rules

Glycolic acid is the acid most people mean when they say “chemical peel”. It is the smallest of the alpha hydroxy acids, which lets it penetrate fastest and work deepest, and that makes it both the most effective resurfacer in the family and the one that most needs controlling — on Indian skin especially, where a peel pushed too deep leaves marks darker than the ones it was meant to fix. This page explains how it works, how a professional controls its depth, the strengths we use at AI Aesthetics and why, and the Jaipur-specific rules that decide whether you get a glycolic peel at all on a given day.

Glycolic Acid: The Resurfacing AHA — How Peels Work, Strengths and Jaipur Rules — Facial and skin treatment room at AI Aesthetics, C-Scheme, Jaipur

What glycolic acid is

Glycolic acid is a two-carbon molecule — the simplest alpha hydroxy acid there is — originally derived from sugar cane. It is water-soluble, so it works on the water-rich surface of the skin rather than inside oily pores (that is salicylic acid’s territory). Its tiny size is the whole story: it slips between surface cells faster than lactic or mandelic acid, which means more effect per minute, and more need for the person applying it to watch the clock.

Depth control Concentration, pH / free acid, contact time, skin prep, and neutralisation

How it works: two layers, two timescales

In the epidermis — exfoliation

Surface skin cells are bound to each other by desmosomes, protein rivets that the skin normally dissolves on its own schedule as cells mature and shed. Glycolic acid weakens those rivets ahead of schedule. At low strength and short contact that means an even, accelerated shedding of the dull outer layer — the “glow” of a light peel. At higher strength or longer contact the acid reaches deeper into the epidermis and lifts more of it, which is what corrects texture, superficial pigmentation and the marks left by acne, at the cost of visible peeling for a few days.

In the dermis — remodelling

Repeated glycolic peels do something the surface effect alone would not predict: they increase collagen production and the water-binding molecules of the dermis. The mechanism is partly the controlled injury signalling repair and partly a direct effect on fibroblasts. This is why a glycolic series improves fine lines and firmness, not just surface texture — and why the results of a course outlast the exfoliation itself.

Controlling depth — what the professional is actually doing

A glycolic peel is not “painted on and left”. Its depth is set by five dials, and on darker skin the person holding them matters more than the acid: the concentration chosen; the pH and free-acid content of the formulation; how long it is left in contact; how the skin was prepared — degreased, pre-treated, or deliberately not; and the moment of neutralisation with a buffering solution that stops the acid in its tracks. Our therapists work to the plan the engine writes and the doctor reviews, including the contact time, and watch the skin for the first signs of erythema. Stopping a peel early is routine and is not a failed treatment.

How we use glycolic acid at AI Aesthetics

PeelGlycolic strengthChosen when
Glyco Peel 35 35% Texture, roughness, fine lines, surface renewal — the engine’s first candidate when rejuvenation is the main goal
Fusion Peel-E 30%, with 10% salicylic, 10% lactic, 2% pyruvic Post-acne pigmentation needing resurfacing plus pigment correction
Whitening Peel 15%, with lactic, kojic acid, arbutin and licorice Tone-evening and brightness with mild pigmentation, where resurfacing is secondary

The treatment engine compares these against the Q-switched laser and carbon facial for pigmentation and texture, and against gentler peels for glow, and it must justify the choice — a glycolic peel is never selected because it is familiar. It also obeys a simple hierarchy: Glyco Peel 35 outranks the gentler mandelic option for texture unless safety or tolerance clearly says otherwise.

Why Jaipur sun decides whether you get this peel

A freshly peeled surface has lost its outer layer and with it some of its UV defence. On Indian skin, sun on a healing peel is the classic route to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark patches that can take months to clear and that look worse than the original concern. Our treatment constraints therefore make sun exposure a hard gate: more than two hours of daily sun exposure blocks all medium and deep peels (and the Q-switched laser); one to two hours blocks deep peels. The engine asks, and it will not schedule a Glyco 35 for a client who spends afternoons outdoors uncovered, however suitable the skin otherwise is. The same logic blocks medium and deep peels for a week either side of travel or a social event, after glycolic or salicylic use the previous day, and within 24 hours of retinol.

  • Best season: October to February, when UV is lower and the social calendar makes results worth having — but book around events, not into them.
  • Summer: glycolic peels are usually replaced by lactic, mandelic or enzyme options unless sun discipline is genuinely strict.
  • Monsoon: humidity makes healing comfortable, but sweat on a peeling face irritates; plan sessions on days you can stay indoors.
  • Neck, back and body pigmentation: thicker skin tolerates glycolic well, and the Neck/Back Peel uses it to good effect — sunscreen on the neck is the step most people forget.

Who should not have a glycolic peel

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — medium and deep peels are excluded; only the Party Peel and Pumpkin Peel are permitted in pregnancy
  • Isotretinoin in the past six months, or a history of keloid scarring
  • Active cold sores, eczema, dermatitis or open skin on the face
  • A fresh tan, sunburn or more than two hours of daily unprotected sun
  • Blood thinners — our constraints limit these clients to gentle exfoliation only
  • Glycolic or salicylic acid used yesterday, or retinol in the past 24 hours
  • Any laser or high-heat treatment in the past seven days
  • Travel or a social event within the next seven days, for medium and deep strengths

What to expect

During: warmth and tingling that builds over the contact time, then relief at neutralisation. After a 15% peel: a day of pinkness and little visible flaking — brighter skin within days. After a 30–35% peel: pinkness for a day or two, visible flaking from day three to five, and smoother, more even skin as it settles, improving across a monthly series of three to six. Dermal benefits — firmness, fine lines — show over the course rather than the session. Sunscreen is applied before you leave and is non-negotiable for the following week. Results vary from person to person.

Glycolic acid: frequently asked questions

What does a glycolic acid peel do?

It loosens the bonds between surface skin cells so the dull outer layer sheds evenly, and with repeated peels it stimulates collagen in the dermis. Results range from a light glow at 15% to texture and pigmentation correction at 30–35%.

Which glycolic peels does AI Aesthetics use?

Glyco Peel 35 for texture and rejuvenation, Fusion Peel-E (30% glycolic with salicylic, lactic and pyruvic acids) for post-acne pigmentation, and the Whitening Peel (15% with kojic acid, arbutin and licorice) for tone-evening.

Is glycolic acid safe for dark or Indian skin?

Yes when depth is controlled — the right strength, contact time, neutralisation and strict sun avoidance afterwards. Pushed too deep or followed by sun, it can cause post-inflammatory darkening, which is why our constraints gate it on sun exposure.

Why did the clinic refuse my glycolic peel?

Most often because of sun: more than two hours of daily exposure blocks all medium and deep peels in our rules. Travel or an event within a week, acids used yesterday, retinol in the past 24 hours, pregnancy and blood thinners also block it.

How does a glycolic peel differ from a salicylic peel?

Glycolic is water-soluble and resurfaces the skin surface — texture, tone, fine lines. Salicylic is oil-soluble and clears pores from inside — acne, blackheads, oil. For acne with pigmentation the Combination or Fusion peels use both families.

How much peeling will I see?

At 15% very little — a day of pinkness. At 30–35% visible flaking from day three to five, then smoother skin. The peel is controlled to the plan and stopped early if the skin reacts.

Can I have a glycolic peel in summer?

Only with genuinely strict sun protection. The engine usually substitutes lactic, mandelic or enzyme peels in high-UV months, and schedules glycolic series from October to February.

Is glycolic acid safe in pregnancy?

Medium and deep glycolic peels are excluded. In pregnancy our constraints permit only the Party Peel and the Pumpkin Peel.

How many glycolic peels are needed?

A series of three to six, three to four weeks apart, depending on the goal; texture and firmness benefits build over the course. Results vary from person to person.

Can glycolic acid remove a tan?

It lifts the tanned outer layer and is part of our de-tan approach, but tan on sun-exposed skin returns unless exposure changes; sun discipline matters more than the peel.
