PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide): The Salmon-DNA Repair Active Explained

“Salmon DNA facial” sounds like a marketing invention, and the name does not help. The active underneath it, PDRN, is one of the better-studied regenerative ingredients in aesthetic medicine, with a mechanism that is unusually well described and a history in wound care that predates its use on faces. This page explains what PDRN is, exactly how it gets a tired or damaged skin to repair itself, how we use it at AI Aesthetics in Jaipur, and the one allergy question we will always ask first.

PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide): The Salmon-DNA Repair Active Explained — Facial and skin treatment room at AI Aesthetics, C-Scheme, Jaipur

What PDRN is

Polydeoxyribonucleotide is a mixture of DNA fragments — chains of the same four nucleotides that make up your own genetic material — purified from the sperm cells of salmon and trout. The fragments are cut to a defined size range, roughly 50 to 1,500 kilodaltons, and stripped of proteins so that nothing in the preparation can provoke an immune reaction against fish protein. Salmon is used because its DNA is remarkably close to human DNA in structure, abundant, and easy to purify to pharmaceutical grade.

The important thing to understand is that PDRN does not “add DNA” to your cells, and it does not change your genes. The fragments sit outside cells, where they are broken down and used in two quite different ways — one as raw material, the other as a signal.

At a glance

PropertyDetail
Class Nucleic acid fragment mixture (deoxyribonucleotide polymers)
Source Purified salmon / trout germ cells, protein-free
Fragment size ≈ 50–1,500 kDa
Primary receptor Adenosine A2A receptor on fibroblasts, keratinocytes and immune cells
Secondary role Supplies purine and pyrimidine building blocks via the salvage pathway
Routes used at the clinic Ultrasound / jet infusion after hydradermabrasion; after microneedling; skin-booster protocols

How it works: a switch and a supply

The switch — adenosine A2A

As enzymes in the tissue break the fragments down, they release adenosine and related nucleosides. These bind the adenosine A2A receptor, which sits on the surface of fibroblasts, keratinocytes, blood-vessel cells and immune cells. Activating A2A does three things that matter for skin: it turns down inflammatory signalling, it stimulates fibroblasts to make collagen and to migrate into areas that need repair, and it promotes the growth of small blood vessels through VEGF. In short, it flips tissue from a stressed, inflamed state into a repair state. Laboratory work that blocks the A2A receptor removes most of PDRN’s effect, which is how we know this is the main mechanism rather than a guess.

The supply — the salvage pathway

Cells that are dividing to repair skin need nucleotides to build new DNA. They can make them from scratch, slowly, or recycle ready-made pieces through what biochemists call the salvage pathway. PDRN fragments are exactly those ready-made pieces. Under stress — after a peel, laser, sun damage or in slow-healing skin — the salvage route lets cells proliferate faster than they otherwise could.

Together these explain why PDRN appears in the clinic in three apparently different roles: calming redness, speeding recovery after a corrective treatment, and improving texture and fine lines over a series.

The evidence, honestly

PDRN has a longer clinical record than most regenerative actives. Injectable PDRN is an approved medicine in several countries for wound healing and tissue repair, including difficult diabetic foot ulcers, with controlled trials behind that use. In aesthetics, studies — mostly small, mostly Korean — report improved skin hydration, elasticity, fine lines and post-procedure healing after courses of injected or microneedled PDRN, and reduced redness and downtime when it is applied after lasers. Topical PDRN on intact skin is the weakest route, which is why we only use it after the surface has been prepared. It is a supportive regenerative active with a plausible, demonstrated mechanism; it is not a filler, not a lifting treatment, and it does not produce visible change in one session the way a peel does. Results vary from person to person.

How we use PDRN at AI Aesthetics

The Salmon Facial

Our Salmon Facial is built around PDRN as the infusion step. After hydradermabrasion cleans and exfoliates the surface, PDRN is driven into the upper skin layers with the ultrasound infusion probe, and the session closes with the ice probe and barrier-supporting finish. The engine chooses it for barrier stress, redness, dehydration-with-sensitivity and the “tired” post-travel pattern — the situations where repair signalling matters more than exfoliation.

After microneedling and in skin boosters

For texture, early lines and post-acne scarring, PDRN is applied immediately after microneedling, when thousands of micro-channels let it reach the dermis where fibroblasts live. In our skin-booster protocols it is one of the regenerative options alongside hyaluronic acid and exosomes, chosen by goal: hydration-first favours hyaluronic acid, repair-first favours PDRN.

As recovery support after corrective treatments

Because it dampens inflammation and speeds re-epithelialisation, PDRN is a natural finishing infusion after a stronger peel or a laser session when the engine’s barrier indices suggest the skin will need help settling. This is one of the ways a stacked session stays coherent: the corrective step does the work, PDRN helps the skin recover from it.

What Jaipur clients should know

  • Heat and dust are a constant low-grade inflammation for Jaipur skin. Clients who describe their face as permanently a little red or reactive by evening are the ones who tend to respond best to PDRN’s anti-inflammatory side — it addresses the state, not just the look.
  • After sun: PDRN is a sensible recovery step after an unavoidable day in the sun, a wedding week or a desert trip. It is not a substitute for sunscreen, and it will not undo a tan.
  • Dry seasons: in winter and the pre-monsoon weeks, pair PDRN with hyaluronic acid; repair signalling works better in hydrated tissue.
  • Festive planning: PDRN is a build-up ingredient. A series starting four to six weeks before an event reads as calmer, more even, better-textured skin; it does not give a same-night glow.
  • Vegetarian clients sometimes ask — PDRN is derived from fish. If that matters to you, say so; the engine has plant-derived and synthetic alternatives for most goals.

Who should not have PDRN

  • Fish or seafood allergy — this is the question we will always ask. Pharmaceutical PDRN is protein-free and reactions are rare, but we do not take the risk with a known allergy
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — no safety data, so deferred
  • Active infection, cold sores or open wounds in the treatment area
  • A current or recent cancer history — regenerative signalling is avoided until your oncologist clears it
  • Autoimmune skin conditions in flare
  • Where the delivery step is the problem: recent isotretinoin or a keloid tendency rule out the microneedling route, though infusion after hydradermabrasion may still be possible

What to expect

As an infusion after hydradermabrasion: no pain, no downtime, skin that looks calmer and better hydrated within a day or two, with texture and tone improving over a monthly series. After microneedling: the usual day of pinkness from the needling, then noticeably faster settling than needling alone, and gradual texture change over three to four sessions. PDRN’s effects are cumulative; the clearest results come from a planned course with photographs at each visit rather than a single appointment.

PDRN: frequently asked questions

What is PDRN?

Polydeoxyribonucleotide — a purified mixture of DNA fragments from salmon, used in regenerative skin treatments. It signals the skin to repair itself through the adenosine A2A receptor and supplies building blocks for cells that are dividing to heal.

Does PDRN change my DNA?

No. The fragments stay outside your cells, where they are broken down into signalling molecules and recycled nucleotides. Nothing is inserted into your genome.

What is a salmon facial?

Our facial built around a PDRN infusion: hydradermabrasion to prepare the skin, then PDRN driven in with the ultrasound probe, closed with cooling and barrier support. It is chosen for redness, barrier stress, dehydration with sensitivity and post-travel recovery.

How is PDRN different from exosomes?

PDRN is a defined molecule with one main receptor and a long wound-healing record; exosomes are complex vesicles with broader but less-studied signalling. PDRN leans towards calming and recovery; exosomes towards texture and scalp. In our plans they are chosen by goal, sometimes sequenced.

Can I have PDRN if I am allergic to fish?

We advise against it. Pharmaceutical PDRN is protein-free and reactions are rare, but with a known fish or seafood allergy we choose an alternative regenerative active instead.

Is PDRN safe?

Used topically or by infusion after proper screening it is generally well tolerated; the risks are mostly those of the delivery step (microneedling) and allergy. We defer it in pregnancy, active infection, autoimmune flares and recent cancer history.

How many PDRN sessions are needed?

A monthly series of three to four is typical for texture and barrier goals, with review and photographs. A single session can help recovery after a stronger treatment but will not change texture on its own. Results vary.

Does PDRN help acne scars?

As an infusion after microneedling it supports healing and texture within a scar plan that usually includes RF microneedling or peels. It is an adjunct rather than the main scar treatment.

Is PDRN good for sensitive or red skin?

Yes — its anti-inflammatory action through the A2A receptor is the reason it suits reactive, easily flushed skin, and why the engine selects it for our sensitive-skin recovery facial.

Is PDRN vegetarian?

No, it is derived from fish. If that is a concern, tell us; plant-derived or synthetic alternatives exist for most of the same goals.
