Chemical Peel Aftercare: The Seven Days That Decide Your Result
A chemical peel is finished in fifteen minutes; its result is decided over the next seven days. Everything that goes wrong after a peel on Indian skin — the dark patch, the prolonged redness, the breakout — happens because of what was done afterwards, not the acid itself. This is the aftercare we hand every peel client at AI Aesthetics, written out in full: what to apply, what to avoid, what the flaking days look like, and the signs that mean you should message us rather than wait.

The rules that apply every day for a week
- Sunscreen every morning, reapplied every two to three hours outdoors: a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide, SPF 30 or more, the quantity of two fingertips. This is the single rule that matters most on pigment-prone skin.
- No sun: avoid direct sun between 10 am and 4 pm; use a scarf, cap or umbrella on the scooter; sit away from windows. Ultraviolet on freshly peeled skin is how a peel creates pigmentation.
- Nothing that exfoliates: no scrubs, no acids, no retinol, no vitamin C serum, no face brushes, no bleach, for seven days or as the therapist advised.
- No picking, peeling or scratching, however tempting the flakes. Skin that is pulled off early is skin that darkens.
- No heat: no steam, sauna, hot yoga, hair-dryer heat on the face, or long hot showers. Heat on a healing barrier triggers pigment.
- No waxing, threading, bleaching or facial hair removal on the area for ten days.
- Keep your hands and your phone screen off your face.
Day by day
| Day | What the skin usually does | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 (peel day) | Pink, warm, tight; may feel like mild sunburn | Leave the clinic sunscreen on; wash only with cool water and a gentle cleanser at night; apply the calming moisturiser; sleep on a clean pillowcase |
| Day 1–2 | Tightness, a shiny or slightly darker look, dryness beginning | Gentle cleanser, squalane-and-panthenol or ceramide moisturiser morning and night, sunscreen; no make-up on day 1 if possible |
| Day 3–5 | Flaking or peeling, starting around the mouth and nose; stronger peels peel more | Moisturise more often, never pull flakes; mineral sunscreen is still essential; light make-up is fine over moisturiser |
| Day 5–7 | Flaking finishes; new skin looks smoother and brighter, sometimes pink | Keep moisturising and protecting; no actives yet |
| Day 7–10 | Settled | Resume your routine gradually: niacinamide first, then vitamin C, then retinol or acids last, one at a time, with the clinic’s go-ahead |
Glow, acne and detan peels often produce little or no visible peeling; that is normal and does not mean the peel did not work. Yellow and pigmentation-focused peels peel visibly. Some clients see a day or two of darkening before the flaking — the pigment lifting — which clears as the skin sheds.
What to apply
- Cleanser: a bland, fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser, with cool or lukewarm filtered water where possible; Jaipur tap water’s minerals sting a peeled barrier
- Moisturiser: squalane and panthenol for the first days, or a ceramide cream; apply as often as the skin feels tight, without rubbing
- Sunscreen: tinted mineral, zinc oxide based; reapply outdoors
- Nothing else. No serums, no toners, no masks, no home remedies — including the besan, lemon, curd and aloe that family members will suggest

Jaipur-specific aftercare
- Scooter and car: a scarf over the face and a cap; the windscreen does not stop UVA.
- Dust: cleanse gently in the evening to remove particulate; do not scrub it off.
- Air conditioning: dries a peeled face fast; moisturise before leaving the house and keep a small tube at the desk.
- Summer: peels are scheduled in the cooler months where possible; if you have peeled in the heat, the sun rules are absolute.
- Weddings and functions: a peel within seven days of a function is withheld by our rules, so if you have one coming, tell the therapist before the session, not after.
When to message the clinic
Mild tightness, flaking and pinkness are normal. Message us the same day if you notice: blistering; swelling of the lips or eyes; a burning pain that worsens after day one; weeping, crusting or pus; a rash spreading beyond the treated area; or a patch that turns noticeably darker and stays dark after the flaking. Early action — usually a calming cream and a sun-protection reset — prevents most of these from leaving a mark. Do not treat any of them with over-the-counter steroid creams or whitening creams.
Between sessions
Peels work as a course, two to four weeks apart. Between sessions: sunscreen daily, the gentle routine for the first week, your actives from the second week with the clinic’s guidance, and no other exfoliating treatments — no clean-ups, scrubs or salon facials — until the course ends. Retinol must be stopped at least 24 hours before each session, because our rules withhold the next peel if it has been used; if you forget, tell us, and we will adjust rather than proceed.

Chemical peel aftercare: frequently asked questions
What should I avoid after a chemical peel?
Sun, heat, scrubs, acids, retinol, vitamin C serums, picking at flakes, waxing or threading, and home remedies, for seven to ten days. Use only a gentle cleanser, a bland moisturiser and mineral sunscreen.
How many days does skin peel after a chemical peel?
Flaking usually starts on day two or three and finishes by day five to seven. Glow and detan peels often peel very little; yellow and pigmentation peels peel more visibly.
Can I wear make-up after a peel?
Light, non-comedogenic make-up over moisturiser is fine from day two; avoid it on peel day if you can.
Why did my skin look darker after the peel?
A day or two of darkening before flaking is the lifted pigment shedding and is normal. A patch that stays dark after the flaking should be reported so it can be treated early.
When can I restart retinol after a peel?
From about day seven to ten, one active at a time, with the clinic’s go-ahead, and stopped again 24 hours before the next session.
Can I wash my face with normal tap water after a peel?
Yes, but Jaipur’s hard water can sting a peeled barrier; cool filtered water for the first few days is more comfortable.
