Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do in the Week After a Session, and Between Sessions
Laser hair removal has little downtime, which is why aftercare gets ignored — and why the problems we see are almost always self-inflicted: a sunburn on lasered legs, a wax between sessions, a hot-yoga class the same evening. This is the complete aftercare we give every laser client at AI Aesthetics, covering the first 48 hours, the shedding weeks that follow, what to do between sessions, and the specific rules for Jaipur sun and heat that decide whether a course stays on schedule.

The first 48 hours
- Expect mild redness and small bumps around the follicles — the sign the laser reached them. They settle within hours to a day.
- Leave the soothing cream and sunscreen applied in clinic in place until evening.
- Cool, not hot: cool showers, no hot baths, sauna, steam, hot yoga or intense sweating for 48 hours; heat on warmed follicles causes folliculitis and darkening.
- No friction: loose cotton clothing over treated areas; no tight jeans on lasered legs or bikini line, no sports bra straps rubbing lasered underarms.
- No deodorant or antiperspirant on lasered underarms for 24–48 hours; no perfume, no scrubs, no exfoliating acids on any treated area.
- Apply a squalane-and-panthenol or ceramide cream morning and night to the area for the week; it prevents the dry bumps that follow shaving plus heat.
- No swimming pools or hot tubs for 48 hours.

Sun: the rule that decides the whole course
Lasered skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet for about two weeks, and tanned skin cannot be lasered at all — the laser cannot tell tanned epidermis from hair, and the risk of a burn or a dark patch is real. The two rules follow: protect treated areas from sun for two weeks after every session, and arrive at every session untanned. On the face that means a tinted mineral sunscreen reapplied through the day and a scarf on the scooter; on arms and legs it means covering up or sunscreen on any exposed skin. A client who arrives tanned is rescheduled under our rules, not treated at lower energy, which is how a course slips by a month in summer.

The shedding phase: weeks one to three
Treated hairs do not vanish on the day. Over the following one to three weeks they loosen and shed, often looking like regrowth before they fall out; many clients mistake this for the laser failing. It is the opposite. Do not pluck, wax or thread the shedding hairs; a gentle wash with a soft cloth helps them along, and shaving is fine from day three if the skin is calm. After shedding, the area stays smoother for weeks until the next cycle of hairs enters its growth phase — which is when the next session is due.
Between sessions
- Shave, never wax, thread, pluck or epilate. The laser needs the hair in the follicle; removing the root resets the cycle and wastes the session.
- Shave the area the day before each session; arriving with stubble means the laser burns surface hair instead of reaching the follicle.
- Keep sessions four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight on the body; stretching the gap lets the cycle drift, and shortening it treats follicles that are not ready.
- Avoid bleach, hair-removal creams and self-tanner on the area throughout the course.
- Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids on the treated area three days before each session.
- Tell the clinic about new medication — some antibiotics and acne medications make skin light-sensitive and a session must wait.
Jaipur-specific aftercare
- Scooter commute: sleeves, gloves and a scarf in summer are part of the course, not optional; forearms and the upper lip tan fastest.
- Heat: in May and June, book morning sessions and go home, not to the market; the 48-hour heat rule is hardest to keep in a Jaipur afternoon.
- Sweat and folliculitis: a sweaty day on freshly lasered underarms or bikini line can produce pustules; shower cool, pat dry, apply the cream.
- Hard water: rinse treated areas with filtered water for a few days if the skin stings.
- Weddings: plan the last session at least two weeks before a function; the shedding phase is not photogenic on the upper lip.
When to message the clinic
Redness and bumps for a day are normal. Message us the same day for: blistering or a burn-like patch; redness that worsens after 24 hours instead of settling; a cluster of pustules; a grid-like or patchy darkening of the skin a week or two later; or hives and itching beyond the treated area. Early calming treatment prevents most marks, and the settings are adjusted for your next session. Do not apply steroid or whitening creams yourself.
After the course
After six to eight sessions most clients need a maintenance session once or twice a year, more often with PCOS or thyroid conditions. Between maintenance sessions, shaving is the only removal method to use, and the sun rules relax to ordinary daily sunscreen. Skin that is no longer waxed monthly lightens and smooths on its own over the following year — the part of the result nobody expects.

Laser hair removal aftercare: frequently asked questions
What should I avoid after laser hair removal?
Heat, sweat, friction, sun, deodorant on underarms, scrubs and acids for 48 hours; sun exposure on the area for two weeks; and waxing, threading or plucking for the whole course.
Why is my hair growing back a week after laser?
It is not growing; it is shedding. Treated hairs loosen and fall out over one to three weeks and can look like regrowth first. Do not pluck them; shaving is fine from day three.
Can I shave between laser sessions?
Yes, and you should — shaving keeps the follicle intact for the next session. Shave the day before each visit. Never wax, thread or epilate during a course.
Can I go in the sun after laser hair removal?
Protect the area from sun for two weeks, and arrive at every session untanned. Tanned skin is rescheduled under our rules because the laser cannot distinguish tan from hair.
What cream should I use after laser hair removal?
A squalane-and-panthenol or ceramide cream morning and night for the week, plus mineral sunscreen on exposed areas. No scrubs, acids or perfumed lotions.
When should I call the clinic after a laser session?
The same day for blistering, worsening redness after 24 hours, a cluster of pustules, patchy darkening a week or two later, or itching and hives beyond the treated area.
