HIFU Aftercare and Recovery: What the First Week and the Next Three Months Look Like
HIFU has almost no visible downtime and a long, invisible recovery: the lift develops over three months while thousands of tiny thermal points in the deep tissue heal into new collagen. Clients who understand that timeline are delighted at month three; clients who expected a facelift on day two are disappointed by week one. This guide sets out what is normal after a HIFU session at AI Aesthetics, what to avoid and for how long, the realistic results timeline, and the few signs that should bring you back to the clinic.

What is normal after HIFU
| Timeframe | Normal | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same day | Pinkness for an hour; a tight, slightly swollen feeling; mild tenderness to touch | Thousands of coagulation points and the immediate collagen contraction |
| Days 1–5 | Tenderness along the jawline and over bone when pressing or chewing; mild puffiness; occasional small bruise | Deep tissue healing; most noticeable where tissue is thin over bone |
| Days 5–14 | Occasional tingling, numbness or a ‘tight band’ feeling in patches | Small sensory nerves recovering; resolves on its own |
| Weeks 2–6 | Nothing to feel; nothing much to see yet | New collagen being laid down |
| Weeks 6–12 | Gradual firming and lift, most visible along the jawline and under the chin | Collagen maturing and tightening |
| Months 3–6 | Peak result | Remodelling complete |
The first week: what to do and avoid
- Sunscreen daily as always; the surface is untouched, so there is no special sun restriction beyond ordinary protection.
- Avoid heat on the face for 48 hours: no sauna, steam, hot yoga, intense exercise, or long sun exposure; heat worsens swelling.
- No alcohol for 48 hours and keep salt moderate; both prolong puffiness.
- No facial massage, gua sha, rollers or pressure on the treated areas for two weeks.
- No other energy treatments — RF, laser, microneedling — on the face for two weeks; our rules keep heat devices off a face that is still settling.
- Paracetamol is fine for tenderness; avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers and blood thinners for a few days unless prescribed, to limit bruising.
- Sleep on your back with the head slightly raised for two nights if swelling is noticeable.
- Normal skincare resumes the next day; a ceramide moisturiser is comforting; retinoids can resume after three days.
Why the result takes three months
Each HIFU point heats a millimetre of tissue to around 65–70 °C. The collagen there contracts at once — the slight tightness you feel on the day — and then the body treats each point as a tiny wound, sending fibroblasts to lay down fresh collagen over the following weeks. The visible lift is the sum of thousands of those repairs, and collagen takes six to twelve weeks to mature. Photographs at three months, under the same light and angle as the pre-treatment set, show the change the mirror hides; we take them for every client because daily looking never catches a gradual lift.
Supporting the result
- Protein and hydration: collagen is built from what you eat; a low-protein diet in the three months after HIFU blunts the result
- Sunscreen: ultraviolet degrades the new collagen as fast as it is made
- Retinoid at night, from day three, if your skin tolerates it, for additional collagen signalling
- RF skin tightening from two weeks after HIFU, every four to six weeks, to maintain firming while the lift develops
- Stable weight: significant weight loss in the months after HIFU loosens the skin the treatment tightened
- No smoking: it is the single most effective way to undo collagen
Jaipur-specific notes
- Heat: a tender, puffy face in a 45 °C afternoon is miserable; many clients book HIFU between October and March for comfort alone.
- Hydration: arrive hydrated and stay hydrated for the week; dehydration sharpens the deep aches and slows settling.
- Weddings: HIFU three or more months before a function gives the lift on the day; HIFU in the month before gives puffiness in the photographs.
- Dust and sun: no special precautions beyond normal sunscreen and cleansing; the surface was never broken.
When to contact the clinic
Tenderness, mild swelling, small bruises and patches of tingling or numbness for up to two weeks are all normal. Contact us if you notice: swelling that increases after day three rather than settling; a hard, painful lump under the skin; a blister, welt or burn mark on the surface; numbness or weakness of facial movement that persists beyond two weeks; or any asymmetry of the smile. These are rare, almost always temporary, and best reviewed early.
Maintenance
The result of one session lasts twelve to eighteen months on average, depending on age, skin and lifestyle. A maintenance session is considered at the twelve-month review rather than booked in advance, because some clients need it at a year and others at two. RF between sessions, sunscreen, protein and a retinoid are what stretch the interval.
HIFU aftercare: frequently asked questions
Is swelling normal after HIFU?
Mild puffiness and tenderness, especially along the jawline and over bone, are normal for up to a week. Swelling that increases after day three should be reviewed.
What should I avoid after HIFU?
Heat, intense exercise, alcohol and salt for 48 hours; facial massage and other energy treatments for two weeks; anti-inflammatory painkillers for a few days unless prescribed.
When will I see HIFU results?
Slight tightness immediately, a gradual lift from about six weeks, and the peak at three to six months as new collagen matures. We photograph at three months for comparison.
Can I apply make-up and skincare after HIFU?
Yes, from the same evening. Normal skincare resumes the next day; retinoids from day three.
Is numbness after HIFU normal?
Patches of tingling or numbness for up to two weeks are common and resolve as small sensory nerves recover. Numbness or facial weakness beyond two weeks should be reviewed.
How long does HIFU last and when is maintenance needed?
Twelve to eighteen months on average. Maintenance is considered at the twelve-month review; RF, sunscreen, protein and a retinoid extend the result.
